Damtew Hailu began farming coffee in 2003 on just one hectare in the village of Ganjichalla, Gera, selling his cherry to the HGQM cooperative in nearby Chala. He expanded to four hectares in 2007, still selling through the cooperative, before taking the leap to sell directly into the central market in 2015. Two years later, in 2017, he entered the export market for the first time.
By 2018, Damtew's farm had grown to 11 hectares, alongside a thriving apiary he tends as well. Through all of that growth, he's stayed committed to natural processing. He and his wife live on the farm with their two daughters and one son.
